Arts Award Supporter Spotlight

Making Spaces

Making Spaces is an active Arts Award centre and have decided to become an Arts Award Supporter to reach out to more young people. Making Space is a unique charity craft venue and encourage and recognise young people doing exciting creative things. In addition to their two fully equipped teaching spaces (a jewellery studio and ceramics studio), there are seven individual studios where local artists and makers run their businesses. The creative diversity and variety of talent on show is a great inspiration for any young person doing their Arts Award! For Making Space, getting more people through the doors is always a bonus. They believe that the more varied projects and Arts Award support they offer to young people, the stronger their portfolio and confidence, meaning they can offer greater support and guidance.

They believe that accrediting young people's arts journey through Arts Award makes it more worthwhile and gives them recognition to be proud of, in addition their new found creative skills.

"I have been working in the arts industry for the last seven years and have organised countless creative projects with young people during that time. The ones that stick in my mind though are the ones where an Arts Award has been our goal. Whilst the sense of achievement and enjoyment can be felt through learning a new skill in any creative workshop, the added bonus of achieving an Arts Award is something that young people can take real pride in. I recommend this scheme to anyone thinking of organising a creative project. The structure of Arts Award can easily be embedded into your session plan and helps the young people discover new things about how the arts are part of their life and opens their eyes to new experiences, artists or art forms."
Ami Lowman, Making Space

"I wanted to go back to college to do art as I really loved it at school but I don't have the entry grades to do so, and I can't go back now because I have a daughter. I like this project because it allows me to do something that I really enjoy and that I actually want to do. I like that it's close to home and I like the fact the Arts Award is a qualification in the arts that I can get outside of a normal college"
